How Feathers Save Chicken {and dog} Lives

Never, ever in my whole life have I been more grateful for real, live, breathing chickens than I have been today.  Here's why:

Part One: Remember how I moved back to Utah and have been reunited with my mountains?!
Well you better believe that once the weather warmed up, I've been making love to those dirt trails like no other! Actually, my shoes have. But you get the idea.
Lola and Piper have shared my enthusiasm and have been on cloud nine with all the new smells and poop trails that they've found along the way. Lola has been such a good girl lately, I've been able to let her off the leash so she can run and play as she pleases. You want to know why she can do that? It's because she comes running right when I call her name. Like the angelic dog that's burried deep within tells her to. Piper is still leash bound because her adventurous spirit tends to tune-out the sound of my voice once that leash is unclicked from her rhinestone collar.  The devil on her shoulder tends to drown out the angel on the other side.

Part Two: Today, when I went home for lunch, I brought them out to the field next to our house to do business. Piper was leash bound and Lola was wandering, looking for the perfect spot to drop it.
All of a sudden, something caught Lola's eye. It was the neighbor's chicken that had somehow escaped the safety of the chicken-wired fence and was out-and-about exploring the wilderness of their backyard. All it took was the movement of feathers and Lola was off to smell out this new creature. My heart sank as I tried to run inside as fast as possible to lock Piper up {believe you me, we did not want Piper in that mix} and retrieve Lola before the smell of chicken brought out her inner bird-dog. No sooner had I closed the door before I saw Lola prancing across the field with her new-found toy. I was sick and starting to cry as I ran toward her, praying that somehow, the chicken would be okay.
She approached me, so proud of her big feathered prize, and to my relief, the only thing that her teeth had grasped was a mouth full of feathers on the back of Hulda {yes, I've named the chicken. We'd been through too much together at this point to not have given her a name}. I pryed Lola's mouth open and released the timid bird who ran to hide behind a bush while I drug my disappointed puppy inside to join her sister.

I returned to the field to look for my new friend, who I found hovering underneath a patch of thorny bushes. I picked her up without protest and cradled her like a baby.

The Part That's Somewhat Unrelated, Yet Necessary To The Story:
I feel like now would be a good time to insert the fact that, although I am a huge animal lover, I have had difficulty considering chickens as a receiver of that love. Mostly because I've been attacked by so many of them. I had one rooster who took it upon himself to be my horse's personal body guard. The only way to retrieve my horse was to go out in the field with a pitch fork and pocket full of rocks to ward off the claws of the attacking bird. I've hated them ever since.

Hulda was the most precious chicken I'd ever seen. She rested in my arms without complaint, and call me crazy, but I think she actually enjoyed the cuddling while I hiked around trying to return her to a place of safety.
To my dismay, all of the doors to the chicken coop were locked. My next option was to knock on the neighbors' door and come up with an explanation as to why I was holding their feather barren chicken. It had to be a good and believable explanation, one that wouldn't make them want to kill my dog. But yet again, it was a dead end. My only other option was climbing the fence. A fence that was lined with chicken wire and wouldn't allow climbing with my current and oversized bootwear.
You guessed it, boots came off and I was barefoot, climbing a fence, in someone else's yard, with someone else's chicken, in my professional work attire, like a freaking hill-billy!
But it was all worth it to see the relief in Hulda's eyes once she was back in the pen with her goat friends. Poor baby.

And that, my friends, was the day I was glad that chickens have feathers.
Not just because I love feather earrings, but because feathers save lives.
Obviously I'm feeling extreme satisfaction right now. I probably will be able to eat dinner {my nerves wouldn't allow lunch} and the shaking of my hands has subsided. All is well with the world and Lola will no longer be allowed off the leash in bird infested areas. Her instincts are stronger than the sound of my voice.
But you know what's stronger than instincts?
Prayers for a bird named Hulda.

Creative Tales & Puppy Kisses

I have to tell you, the arrival of autumn marks the awakening of my creative spirit!
Apparently it goes in to hibernation in the summer months??
A little backwards if you ask me. Most things hibernate during the winter.
I would prefer to keep ahold of it year round, but I'll take what I can get.
This lovely photo was taken on the dirt road that I frequent on my runs!
Isn't it beautiful?!
Oklahoma really has some great scenery to offer, even if it is lacking in mountainous ranges.
And of course, I took one of my sweet angels with me!

Isn't she the sweetest?!
Oh, how I love those sweet puppy kisses!
We count ourselves lucky when Lola graces us with one of her gentle tongue swipes.
They are few and far between...which makes them treasures!
And would you believe me if I told you I took BOTH of these pictures?!
Because I did.
With the help of my good friend, the tripod.

Here's me hoping that your weekend is as beautiful as mine!

'Tis' Times Three

I just realized that I used the word "tis" in two consecutive blog posts.
This would make it three consecutive blog posts.
However, that's not what I'll be writing about today.
Today, I'll be writing about my second child's constant need for discipline and attention.
Oh, and please know, when I say children, I do mean dogs, which are pretty much the same thing as children, except they love you more and don't demand clothing.
{P.S. If you're reading this and happen to be one of those poor, lonely souls who've never known the endless and devoted love of a four legged friend, please feel free to close this browser and click on the blog of a fish lover. You'll probably feel more "at home" there. There is really no gray area here. Dog=child. That's that.}
Yesterday the weather in Oklahoma took a thirty degree dive. Having grown up in Utah, these dramatic weather outbursts are nothing but the norm. They actually make me feel more at home.
Anyway, husband and I had a lazy day snuggled up inside by the fire with the two poochies!
Quite honestly, I was in heaven! Nothing warms my heart more than days cozied up inside with my sweet family! I even made my oh-so-famous potato soup!
However, my sweet Piper demands our constant attention. And when she doesn't have it, she finds ways to get it....like howling, barking or jumping on the counter and eating our food.
She really is an angel from heaven, even on the days when it feels like she's visiting from the land down under {and I'm not talking about Australia}.
Today she was put in "time-out" and restricted to her leash multiple times.
And when she was leash restricted, her solution: pouting.
Pouting and looking at me with that sweet bear face, pleading with me to let her run free. You would think that she is the most neglected child in the world.
Most dramatic is more like it.
But my heart just melts in those sweet puppy eyes!
Not sure what that says about my parenting skills. One thing's for sure, Matt will definitely have to be the disciplinarian!

Thursday=Blurgsday

I don't know about any of you out there, but by the time I reach Thursday, I'm beyond exhausted from the week!! I guess that happens to most people on Fridays, but Fridays to me are like the beginning of a three day long, much anticipated, adventure!!! I feel somewhat renewed....if I can just make it past Thursday! It's my hump day {in the Wednesday sense of the word}.

But I do have a few thoughts, blurgs, if you will. No real meaning. Just thoughts.

I'm currently in search of my youngest doghter {Piper}'s drug dealer. I know she is secretly huffing crack. {Can you even huff crack?? Or do you sniff it? Or shoot it?} Why, you ask? Well let me tell you.
Every night Piper has the same routine:
  1. Stand in front of couch. Stare at couch cushion for approximately 2 minutes.
  2. Nose dive into couch.
  3. Walk around in circles, in the same spot - repeat five times.
  4. Dig in couch.
  5. Bark at couch for not being dirt that makes it easy to dig.
  6. Roll back and forth.
  7. End in this position:
***For best results, repeat daily.

See...I told you! Crack. Or maybe those questionable dog bones that grandma likes to give them? Either way, I love her sweet face!

Moving on.

I wish The Big Bang Theory was on every. single. hour. It is one of those shows that makes me and husband laugh so hard, our cold cereal gets soggy {because we're too busy laughing to think about eating}! And in case you're wondering, cold cereal is a very healthy {???} and viable option for dinner. One of my favorites, in fact! I had Honey Nut Shredded Wheat. :) Maybe cold cereal should be a staple for every Thursday?! I think I'm on to something!

Moving on.

These past couple weeks have been some of the most incredible in my whole "blogging" life {which is not a long one}! I have met so many fun ladies who totally inspire me and make me laugh! I'm so glad to have met you all...and I mean that with every ounce of my being! I'm completely smitten with the blogging community! :) Please keep introducing yourselves! I love reading along with you!

Moving on.

And lastly, I leave you with this bed time routine...straight from our house to yours! Night, night!

Happy Friday!!
I have some fun weekend plans....do you?!

A Poochie Named Lexus

Meet Whitney and Lexi! You may recognize her as the darling girl who was standing next to me in my wedding! {Hint, hint...she was my Maid of Honor!} When I went back to Utah, I was able to meet her sweetest new dog-daughter, Lexi {short for Lexus}! Needless to say, we took quite a few pictures! Lexi is so photogenic and the sweetest not-so-little poochie! She loves to give kisses, stick her head out of the car sunroof, and eat loofas. You can just call her Little Miss Personality! Lola & Piper can't wait to meet their newest best friend! :)

Piper and I went on a photo excursion today!
Here's a couple of my favorites! :)

Isn't she the sweetest little thing?!
My next goal is to get Lola to hold still long enough so I can catch some of her!
Happy first week of the New Year! :)

flowers and dogs and husbands....oh my!

It was a Tuesday morning...nothing special about the day. In fact, I would actually consider it a little too drab and a lot too hot! {I don't know if I'll ever adjust to this Oklahoma humidity!} Anyway, I received a wonderful kiss goodbye from my hubs {all of his kisses are wonderful :) } and we both set off on our separate ways to work.  We both had a busy weekend and didn't get to spend much time alone together, which is always disappointing, but just a part of life sometimes!
Early in the afternoon, Matt told me he was going to try to come visit me and needed the address to where I was going to be {I change locations almost daily with my job}. Of course I gave it to him, because I love ANY excuse that I get to see his sweet smile with the dimple on the side!  Little did I know he had something else up his sleeve.  Later in the afternoon, these came parading through the office and landed on my desk! :)

Sigh.....
Have I mentioned that I really, Really, REALLY love him?! Because I do.

In other news, Lola is about to turn 1!!! Which means that I'm googling "doggie birthday parties" like crazy! Here are some of my favorite ideas so far....

cake {in pink of course!}

game {bob for the bone}
{source}

party favors {from Lola}
{source}

outfit
{source}

Ok, now realistically, Lola wouldn't keep an outfit on for five minutes....whether it's her birthday party or a movie premier!  But one day, when she grows out of her "I like to eat everything" stage, I'll buy her a cute outfit! Until then, we'll stick to cute collars! :)

sometimes all it takes is a look back...

And now....an attempt at finding humor in {an all but normal} week.

Sometimes, when you're having the craziest {and I do mean craziest} of days, all it takes is a look back to help lighten the mood and find a reason to laugh at yourself {and the situation}. Well this is my look back at an accumulation of those days {seven or eight to be specific}, so here we go!
Matt and I have been the parents {some say owners} of two very sweet and spunky dogs for about eight months now {six for Piper}. Lola and Piper have been the source of so many laughs and fun times....but we didn't realize everything that we were signing up for when we decided to get two larger sized dogs.  Let's just say the movies Marley and Me and Beethoven were not at all an exaggeration of the things that happen when you own {big} dogs!  Not only do they tend to push over {or run over} everything in their path of hyper running, but they also tend to chew up everything {and I do mean EVERYTHING} that they can get their little paws on!

RIP...
two pairs of slippers
one $120 shirt {for the record, it was given to Matt for free}
two pairs of shoes
one limited edition OSU cowboys hat
one winter cap {knit especially for Matt by his grandmother}
four doggie beds
two couch pillows
two couch cushions
one lawnmower cord {thus disabling the lawnmower}
one door screen
one rain gutter
*four tree limbs
countless socks
two large quilts
*four towels
*three matchbox cars
*one blue tooth
*one tv remote
*two dvd cases
*one video game {two days after Matt bought it}
*half a wall {yes, an interior wall}

just some thoughts {on moving}

I have a b.b. {short for "blogging buddy"}. And no, it's not my husband...he sometimes claims to be a b.w. {short for "blog widow"}, but don't worry your little heart, he'll survive! Anyway, my b.b. {blogging buddy} would be my sweet dog, Piper! And yes, she is the one previously mentioned in my morning cup of coffee. {As a side note, I no longer want to list her on Craig's list!} Piper has so lovingly taken it upon herself to keep me company while I write all my thoughts out on my computer! Right at this moment, she is fast asleep right beside me. Usually she gets jealous of my laptop and decides she needs to be the one sitting on my lap. Needless to say, Piper usually wins and I end up with my laptop not on my lap {as the description of it specifies}, but on the arm-rest of our couch. FYI: It's much easier to type when it's on my lap. Spoiled dog? I would say yes. But how can you say no to this face?!
In other news, Matt and I made the move to Tulsa and have already set up our mini

My {Morning} Cup of Coffee

I woke up this morning, in the greatest mood! Like something you might see in the 50s, I woke up, fixed my husband breakfast and sent him off to work with the children {dogs} smiling and an extra long kiss....xoxoxoxo....all this while having my hair done, {red} lipstick applied and heals gleaming. Ok, well maybe the last part isn't true. It was more like bed head with my {utah} hoody and {baggy} pajama pants....but it's nice to dream, right?!

After Matt was out of the house, I made my coffee, opened up my laptop to check on current events {facebook} and just as I was about to take my first sip of that deliciously rich cup of steaming energy, I realized Lola had been giving me weird looks. I imagined it was because of the horrible smell that was coming from her {gas}, but then as she ventured over by our pantry, the smell still lingered. I looked over to see what she was smelling just in time to notice the smeared treat {poop} that our newest and youngest doghter {Piper} had left us. Not only had she pooped, but I had neither seen nor smelled it before I had stepped in it, smeared it all over my {favorite and only} slippers, which had then tracked it all through my house. "Oh joy" was not my thoughts as I began cleaning up the horrible smelling mess. In {one part of} my cleaning process, I forgot that I had crawled so far under our table and my back was greeted by the stab of the {sharp} edge of that lovely seating arrangement. Let's just say {not nice} words were flowing. I finally composed myself enough to stop jumping around and yelling, threw my {favorite and only} slippers away and began a Craig's List listing for a 13 week old {free} boxer mix puppy. Let me back up, because I think it's important that you know that while this whole crazy mess was going on, Piper was sound asleep on the couch, blissfully unaware of the fate that awaited her. She woke up just in time to come over, look at me with her big brown eyes and melt away any anger that I held against her. But let's just say, the Craig's List listing, though not present to others, is still lingering on my computer in case of {unhoped} emergency.

So here I am, sipping away, so grateful for my {crazy} little family, the {unexpected} parts of life that make for great blogging stories and most of all, for my {morning} cup of coffee. Sigh. Oh life.

Her name was Lola...she was a show dog?!

Meet Lola Bell! My birthday present and the newest member of the Weiszbrod clan! She has been the funnest (and cutest) addition to our house! Right now, her list of favorite things to do are sleep, chase bugs, puddling in the house and more sleep. She loves giving kisses and contrary to most labs' energetic tendencies, Lola is the most quiet, laid-back dog that I've EVER owned! We just love her to pieces!!!

In other news, we're back from our honeymoon in Jamaica and had such a great time being able to just relax! Married life is the greatest! Having a long distance relationship has made us appreciate our time together much more! I love being able to hang out with my best friend every day and go home with him at night! We're getting all settled in to our house and it's been so much fun!! Pictures will be posted soon! :)
